Thank You This Christmas has been the hardest emotionally we have faced as a family, yet, two things have stood out for us - the incredible NHS, in particular the Dunkery Ward in Musgrove Park Hospital, and the pioneering Companion Service from Marie Curie Cancer Care. My Mother had her third stroke the Sunday before Christmas, and remained unconscious until she passed in the early hours of Boxing Day morning. She was cared for by numerous doctors and nurses and our gratitude to these committed NHS professionals is immense, although we have returned to thank many of them, it is hard to speak to all who were involved. There is another team of people who have touched our hearts with their kindness, these are the volunteers from the Marie Curie Companion Service who give their time freely and at all hours during end of life care. During these difficult times, a nurse told us about this group of volunteers, who would be able to spend time with Mum, in the hours that we could not, whilst her end of life care took hold. This service has only recently started in Musgrove Park, and not only do they provide practical help, they also offer assistance after our loved ones have passed. I have in recent days received a call from Julia Bearne who is part of this fantastic team, and as heart breaking as it was to talk to Julia, I have been able to pass on our gratitude and we will be eternally grateful. When our pain eases, we will repay the kindness extended to our family by helping others in a similar way, until that time - thank you to you all. Amanda Broom
